Here at our house we are BIG Halloween lovers. One of my favorite ways to celebrate during the month of October is by reading fun Halloween books! I've put together a list of our top ten favorite books!
#1 - The Scariest Book Ever by Bob Shea
This is my personal favorite Halloween Book. It's hilarious and makes me and my kids laugh every time we read it. It's about a ghost who is afraid of everything, especially leaving his house. In the end he works up the courage to leave, finds what he was missing out on, and decides that things aren't that scary after all! The illustrations in this one are simple but really fun!
#2 - The Little Ghost Who Was a Quilt by Riel Nason
This book is really cute and the illustrations are so beautiful (can you tell I'm really into book illustrations). In this book there is a little ghost made of a patchwork quilt. All of his family and friends are made from plain white sheets. He feels like he doesn't belong and is always being left out. In the end he finds out that being different isn't all that bad and in fact, it makes him special, despite what others may think.
#3 - Gustavo the Shy Ghost by Flavia Z. Drago
This book resonates with me because I was shy as a little kid. Gustavo is a ghost who really wants to have friends but is too shy to talk to others. He always tries to blend into the background so he doesn't draw attention to himself. He finally decides to be brave and put on a music show for his peers.
#4 - Mr. Pumpkin's Tea Party by Erin Barker
If you have a child who is learning to count, this book is perfect for you! Mr. Pumpkin invites all of his friends for a tea party. Each guest brings a certain number of items to the party. The illustrations in this book are my favorite out of all the Halloween books I own.
#5 - The Dark by Lemony Snicket
This book is about a boy who is scared of the dark. He tries to avoid the dark until one night his night light burns out. The dark helps him find a new lightbulb and he decides that the dark isn't such a bad thing. I appreciate the uniqueness of this book. It's very different from most children's books I have read. We actually keep this one out all year because my kids like it so much.
#6 - The Ugly Pumpkin by Dave Horowitz
This can be a Halloween and Thanksgiving book. The ugly pumpkin doesn't look like the other pumpkins in the patch and never gets picked to go home with anyone. Turns out he's a different kind of squash and that's why he looks so different from the other pumpkins!
#7 - Halloween Bugs by David A. Carter
David A. Carter makes THE best pop up books. I typically try to avoid pop ups because they are so fragile, but he makes very durable, high quality pop ups that last. We own his Christmas book, too. They're some of my kids favorite books!
#8 - Monster Museum by Marilyn Singer
This one is my seven year old son's favorite. He loves that it is more creepy than the other books we own. It's a collection of poems about different types of monsters.
#9 - Little Blue Truck's Halloween by Alice Shertle
If you love the original Little Blue Truck book, you'll enjoy this book! It's a flap book that shows the animals who are going to a Halloween party. You have to guess which animal is underneath the costume, then under the flap it reveals which animal is wearing the costume.
#10 - Stumpkin by Lucy Ruth Cummins
Stumpkin is a pumpkin who is basically perfect except for the fact that he is missing a stem! He sits on the shop shelf with all the other pumpkins and watches as one by one, they all get sold and go to new homes. Stumpkin never gets picked and on the day of Halloween he feels like all hope is lost until... the shop owner carves him into a jack-o'-lantern. The shop owner sets him outside the shop with a bowl of candy for trick or treaters and it turns out that Stumpkin ends up with the best view!
These books are all great additions to your Halloween collection. Your kids are sure to love them!
I know my kids do. Happy reading!
